Required Auto Insurance in West Virginia

In West Virginia, drivers are legally required to have Liability Insurance and Uninsured Motorist Coverage. Liability coverage will help cover the costs of injuries and property damage you may cause to someone else in a car accident that is your fault. It does not compensate for your own injuries or damages.

Uninsured Motorist Coverage helps pay for injuries and damages resulting from an accident in which the other driver was at fault and does not have Auto Insurance. Without this type of insurance, you would be responsible for paying for your own injuries and damages, even if the car accident was not your fault. Your Uninsured Motorist Coverage minimums must be equal to those of your Liability Insurance, but it is highly recommended by our Insurance Specialists that you acquire higher limits. The maximum limits you can have are $100,000 per person/$300,000 per accident for Bodily Injury and $50,000 per accident for Property Damage.

Optional Coverage in West Virginia

While you’re not legally required to carry the following types of coverage, you may first want to assess what the costs of an accident would be out-of-pocket without any additional coverage in these areas at all. You may find that paying a few more dollars a month makes more sense for you. Or, you may feel that you’re financially stable enough to pay for an expensive accident.

Most West Virginia Auto Insurance companies offer the following types of optional coverages:

  • Collision Coverage*: This coverage helps pay for damages in the event of an accident involving other vehicles. Though the cost to fix vehicle damage varies greatly following an accident, you can pretty much count on most car repairs to be fairly costly. With national average repair costs of nearly $3,000, you risk paying those repair costs out of your own pocket if you do not have Collision coverage.
  • Comprehensive Coverage*: If there are damages to your car caused by something other than a car collision, Comprehensive coverage will help cover these types of incidents. This can include compensation for damage done to car by natural disasters, hail, tornadoes, vandalism and more.
  • Underinsured Motorist Coverage: Similar to Uninsured Motorist Coverage, this type of insurance helps pay for injuries or damages caused by another driver who does not have the proper amount or type of Auto Insurance. Without this type of coverage, you would have to may have to pay for some or all of your own injuries or damages even if the accident was not your fault.
  • Medical Payments: This will help cover your medical costs related to injuries from a car accident.
  • Towing and Labor: This coverage reimburses you for towing and labor costs that come from your car breaking down, up to your policy limit.

*Although Collision coverage and Comprehensive coverage are not required by law, they may be required in your car loan or lease contract with the lender.

While West Virginia law does not require any of these optional coverages, it may be in your best interest to pay a few extra dollars a month to make sure you’re financially protected in all possible auto-related situations. If you have questions about these coverages or how to add them to your Auto Insurance policy, contact a licensed AIS agent today.
