Required Auto Insurance in Oklahoma

For nearly all states in the country, residents are required to carry some form of Auto Insurance.  Oklahomans must carry Liability Insurance in order to legally drive in the state. Liability Insurance covers costs (up to your policy’s limits) to the other driver’s injuries and damages if you were found at fault for an accident. Keep in mind, however, that Liability Insurance won’t help pay for any personal damages to you or your vehicle. Because of this, you may want to consider additional coverage above the state minimum.

State Minimum Liability Coverage in Oklahoma

  • BI or Bodily Injury: $ 25,000 per person, $50,000 per accident
  • PD or Property Damage: $25,000 per accident

Optional Coverage in Oklahoma

Car Insurance is designed to help you financially in the event of an accident that you may have caused, but these minimums won’t be of assistance in many other common situations. Consider additional coverage options and higher limits, as doing so could save you a significant amount of money when the unexpected happens.

Below are some examples of optional coverages you may want to consider:

  • Collision Coverage*: In accidents involving other vehicles, Collision coverage helps pay for damages to your own car, up to your policy’s limits. The Liability coverage minimums listed above only help pay for the other people and vehicles involved in a collision, but not your personal damages. With the national average repair costs from a single accident being close to $3,000, you can understand the importance of adding Collision coverage to your policy.
  • Comprehensive Coverage*: For damages not collision-related, like natural disasters, vandalism, hail and more, this type of coverage will cover you. These unavoidable events happen all too often, and you don’t want to be responsible paying the damages out of your own pocket.
  • Uninsured/Underinsured Motorist Coverage: If you are involved in an accident caused by an uninsured driver, you could risk paying for damages yourself, even if the accident wasn’t your fault. This coverage helps pay for expenses caused by the motorist, even if they do not have the proper Auto Insurance. However, in Oklahoma, your Private Passenger Auto policy for Uninsured Motorist Coverage may only cover Bodily Injury and not Property Damage. Check with an AIS agent, or your Auto Insurance provider to make sure you are covered for both BI and PD under this additional coverage.
  • Higher Bodily Injury Limits: Even minor accidents can require medical attention, and serious accidents could cause medical bills to add up quickly. Depending on the extent of injuries, and how many were injured, the minimum covered required by the state may not be enough to cover all the costs. Higher BI coverage could protect you from paying for those costly medical expenses yourself.
  • Higher Property Damage Limits: When you consider the fact that many accidents don’t just involve one, single vehicle the minimum PD limit may not be enough. An accident could cause damage to light poles, fences, buildings and other structures. Considering a higher PD limit could prevent you from paying the remainder yourself.

*Although Collision coverage and Comprehensive coverage are not required by law, they may be required in your car loan or lease contract with the lender.

These types of coverages and higher limits aren’t required by Ohio. But you should consider adding them to your policy, especially if you don’t want anyone coming for your assets in the event that you can’t pay for damages because you don’t have enough coverage.
